We know exactly how lucky we are to be able to do what we do: to be excited every morning to come in to work and miss it when we’re away for any reason. Our company is always on our minds, we’re always planning, thinking, doodling, finding inspiration in the everyday…searching for that next big idea. This is our happy place. We wouldn’t give it up for anything.

But there’s two sides to every story. As much we love the creative side of our jobs, there’s no hiding from the grunt work…the administrative, sales and marketing, financial, day-to-day running of a company isn’t very much fun, but it’s gotta get done (thank goodness for Pam and her never ending To-Do Lists, or Turquoise Palace would just be a pipe dream).

Having young families, five kids under seven between the two of us and being active members of our community means a lot of demands on our time. It’s a non-stop, high-wire balancing act but like millions of other moms out there, we suck it up and do it. Women really do rule!

On any given day, as any entrepreneur will tell you, there are a whole new set of obstacles you need to fight and overcome. We’ve learnt some lessons the hard way. People will not always be kind; you have to develop a thick skin very quickly. You will constantly be reminded of how small you are, how new you are, but the key is to remind yourself not to compare your beginning with someone else’s middle. You will have self-doubt (a lot of it). You will have good days and bad days (truthfully; more bad initially than good). People will surprise you, some with their negativity and some with their generosity. Remember, it takes all kinds to make the world. Never underestimate the power of words. Keep yours kind. You will be hurt, by words, by actions, by behaviour. And every now and then, you’ll meet people who will give you that chance to shine and you will rise to that occasion. That one victory will sustain you till the next and soon you’ll learn that you don’t always win, but you never stop, never give up. Your passion, your business, is counting on you.
